“As a general rule, it is foolish to do just what other people are doing, because there are almost sure to be too many people doing the same thing.” - William Stanley Jevons (1835-82)

The predestination to discover the Southern Cone and beaches of Uruguay came from an opportunity presented to me by my second cousin David Leddick. The Sumner - Leddick ancestry comes from the same conservative Midwest Michigan roots. Our synergy as former Naval Officers seeking creative career paths seemed to gain momentum in the late 1990’s resulting in a close relationship similar to Japan’s Senpai & Kohai system. Roth Sumner Leddick, David’s older brother, was a highly decorated war veteran, submariner of a Command in Hawaii as well as a U.S. Naval Academy Graduate. Matthew Sumner Leddick was a model - The Winston Guy - who helped teach me to paddle out after buying my first surfboard in Middletown, Rhode Island. David’s bio may be best outlined on his personal site:

Previously he has been an officer in the U.S. Navy, danced at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, directed TV commercials and was the Worldwide Creative Director for Revlon at Grey Advertising and International Creative Director for L'Oreal at McCann-Erickson, Paris. [davidleddick.net]

A mutual passion for historical renovation and real estate investing crossed paths in Montevideo, Uruguay in December of 2002 during the tail end of a horrible depression resulting from the great Argentine Peso Crash starting in 1998. My interest peaked in David’s contrarian Investment Thesis in Real Estate as he was anything but conservative resulting numerous successes in the past:

- West Greenwich Village, NY City - 1964
- Paris & Loire Valley, France - 1970’s
- Miami Beach, Florida - 1980/90’s

Barron Rothschild accurately stated “Buy when there’s blood in the streets” and my cousin is a trailblazer into new specific emerging markets with historical charm. David’s acquisition of an incredible historic building/flat where the amalgamation off front fixtures alone exceeded the valuation of the purchase clarified another home run hit - Go Big or Go Home. Training for the Greater Vermont Marathon had me running the streets of La Cuidad Vieja - The Old City - Montevideo dodging horse carts seeing things in the culture which could only be obtained from a ‘boots on the ground’ perspective. I was hooked.

Final gift for renovation and painting of Casa Leddick was a Feral Surf Trip up the north coast near Brazil in a town sought out for the name & point break when it goes - Punta Del Diablo. More will be expanded upon this life changing adventure but the experience resulted in my return every year until it became clear where I should act for the future. In 2007 I was blessed to be in a financial position to act upon the property where California Sur will open - Calle Maldonado. Research & Humility.

Carpe Diem -

Christopher Anthony
